Your first Ladakh trip: leave time for Leh before the road
Plan a first Ladakh trip with time in Leh, realistic choices about Nubra and Pangong, and the official acclimatisation advisory before higher-altitude travel.
Where should a first Ladakh itinerary begin?
Begin with time in Leh, not an immediate drive towards a high pass or lake. The Leh district advisory requires tourists arriving in Leh to allow at least 48 hours for acclimatisation before travelling to higher-altitude areas such as Khardung La and Pangong.
That requirement belongs at the start of your itinerary, before hotel upgrades or optional excursions. Treat it as a minimum planning requirement, not a promise that everybody will be ready after exactly two days. Individual health and the current advice you receive still matter.
Count your available days honestly
Write down your arrival time and departure time before deciding how many places to visit. A seven-day holiday with flights on the first and last days has less touring time than the headline suggests. Once you reserve the arrival period in Leh, there may be room for fewer overnight stops than you expected.
Ask the person quoting your trip to show every overnight location. “Leh, Nubra, Pangong and more” isn't a route. A useful proposal makes clear where you sleep, which days involve substantial driving and where the schedule can change if conditions require it.
Choose one route you actually want
Nubra Valley and Pangong often appear together in trip plans. You don't have to accept that combination simply because it is familiar. Explain what matters to you: more time in one place, photography stops, fewer hotel changes or a particular destination.
For a short visit, ask for a version with fewer stops and compare it with the longer circuit. Pay attention to the days between the headline sights. Those transfer days are part of your holiday too. A route that leaves you exhausted each evening may not suit the experience you had in mind.
A lake stay needs a few extra questions
Before agreeing to an overnight at Pangong, ask for the exact accommodation name and the facilities available for your dates. Confirm heating arrangements, bathroom setup, electricity availability and the cancellation terms. Don't infer them from the word “camp” or from one wide photograph of the lake.
Also ask how the operator handles changes if your group needs to shorten the route. It is easier to discuss a fallback while comparing quotes than after everyone has left Leh. A flexible plan should say what happens to the itinerary and the cost, not merely describe itself as flexible.
Flying into Leh and driving from Kashmir are different trips
A Kashmir-to-Ladakh road itinerary includes additional stages and overnight stops. It should be reviewed as a complete route, not bolted onto the end of a short Kashmir holiday. Ask your operator to explain how their proposed plan accounts for altitude and current travel guidance along the route.

What belongs in the pre-booking conversation?
