Unpack once and see the best of winter Kashmir. You stay in Srinagar, with two hotel nights and a night on a Dal Lake houseboat, and take day trips to the snow: Gulmarg, the famous ski meadow, and Sonamarg, the 'meadow of gold' in the mountains. A good first trip to Kashmir, and easy with children or older parents.
Why you'll love this trip
Day trips to two very different snow places: Gulmarg and Sonamarg.
One base, so nobody packs a bag until it's time to go home.
A night on a houseboat on Dal Lake.
Mughal gardens and a sunset shikara on your first evening.
Is this trip right for you?
Days 2 and 3 are day trips with about 2–3 hours' drive each way.

After heavy snow only 4x4s may drive the last stretch from Tangmarg. We arrange one if needed.
Follow the Sindh river north-east through Kangan and Gund to Sonamarg, the 'meadow of gold', reached in winter through the new Z-Morh tunnel. The valley fills with snow, with peaks on every side: walk out on the snowfields, go sledging, and warm up with kahwa before the drive back. Tonight you sleep on a carved cedar houseboat on Dal Lake.
Included
Private car with a heater for the day
Houseboat check-in with welcome kahwa

Sledging and snow walks in Sonamarg

On the way to the airport or station, stop in the old city: the wooden Jamia Masjid with its 378 cedar pillars, and the lanes around it where papier-mâché and copperware are still made by hand.

Snow 4x4 from Tangmarg on snow days
Before you book
Good to know
In Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg some places can only be reached by local union taxis, ponies or snow 4x4s. We arrange them if you'd like and they go in your quote.
Prepaid SIM cards from outside Jammu & Kashmir don't work here. Postpaid connections do.
Carry a government photo ID. Hotels ask for it, and it can be checked on the road.
Winter in Kashmir
The coldest weeks (Chillai Kalan) run from 21 December to 31 January. Nights can drop well below freezing, so pack thermals, a warm jacket, gloves, a cap and waterproof shoes.
Days are short: the sun sets around 5:30 pm in December and January, so we start early on day trips.
Snow can close roads for a few hours or a day. We keep you informed and swap the plan to whatever is open.
Morning fog can delay flights in December and January. An afternoon flight home gives you a cushion.
Booking and cancellation
Pay 50% to confirm your booking and the rest 30 days before you travel. If you book within 30 days of travel, we ask for the full amount.

Flights, gondola and helicopter tickets, and peak-date hotels we've paid for in advance, can't be refunded. If you cancel, we charge the cancellation charge or these costs, whichever is higher.
You can change your dates once for free up to 30 days before you travel; any difference in price applies. Later changes count as a cancellation.
If weather, landslides, road closures, curfews or government orders stop your trip before it starts, choose new dates, a full credit valid for 12 months, or a refund minus costs we can't recover.
